Ismail Marzuki, one of the greatest composer in Indonesia, was born on Mei 11 1914. As his merited and dedicated to Indonesia through his works, his name has been commemorated as one of art center in Indonesia, Taman Ismail Marzuki in Jakarta.

Ismail Marzuki was born from humble family. His father was an entrepreneur in Kwitang, Senen, Central Jakarta. Since he was born, Ismail Marzuki never got an affection from her mother because of his mother was died when delivered Ismail Marzuki. Ismail Marzuki lived with his father and his two siblings.

His father raised a music talent to Ismail Marzuki since he was a little boy. Ismail Marzuki’s father was a rebana player, or also called as kicking art. Ismail often chanting dzikir while playing the rebana, just like his father. He also frequently requested to chanting in circumcision or wedding party.

Ismail Marzuki started to practice music seriously when he was 17 years old. In 1923, he and his friends created a Lief Java music group that previously named as Rukun Anggawe Santoso. In this group, his talent increasingly honed. He learned to be instrumentalist, singer, and also composer. He loved to played gramophone repeatedly and listened to it over and over again.

Ismail Marzuki heard many kind of music. Not only Hollywood music and Jazz, Ismail Marzuki also attended to Indonesian traditional music, such as Maluku, Minahasa, Bugis, Malay, Minang, Cianjuran song, Gambus, and Keroncong. Schubert, Mozart, Schumann, Mendellshon, and other world greatest composer also have been his favorite.

Ismail Marzuki produced so many songs, including his own creation or re-arrangement song. Some of his best song ever are Oh Sarinah, Rayuan Pulau Kelapa, Melancong di Bali, Halo-Halo Bandung, Arek-Arek Surabaya Mars, Indonesia Tanah Pusaka, Gugur Bunga di Taman Bhakti, Sepasang Mata Bola, Selamat Datang Pahlawan Muda, Selendang Sutra, and others.
