Since its foundation in the 18th century, the National Museum has the motto “For the Public Interest”. It means it takes the responsibility to the public through public programs. As a member of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), the National Museum continues to support policies and the existed programs. One of the provisions of the ICOM is the provision of the International Museum Day on May 18th. This year the theme of International Museum Day Museum Collections is Make Connections.

The International Museum Day is enlivened with a variety of activities that is aimed to socialize, promote, and provide entertainment to the wider community. National Museum plans to hold various activities related to the International Museum Day and its 236th anniversary entitled “Gebyar Festival International Museum Day and 236 Years of MNI”.

The activity will take place on May 17-24th, 2014. The opening event will begin on May 17th by the painting competition for elementary school students and exhibition “Images of National Museum: Past, Present, and to Come”. In addition, there will be cultural shows, movies, video mapping, demos and workshops in cultural creativity (batik, wayang, crafts, and traditional dance), museums creativity contest (writing essays for the general public), a comic race to the public, and seminars. The highlight of this even will be the art performance, awarding prizes to the winners, and the awards to the Indonesian people who have contributed to the progress and development of the National Museum.
